About the Artist

artist self portraitMy name is Heather Daveno. I am a self-taught American-born artisan who has been handcrafting hats for over 20 years. I design my hats one at a time from furs, textiles and found objects salvaged from vintage coats, thrift store finds and other 'second-hand' sources. Working with reclaimed materials allows me to produce the limited edition, one-of-a-kind pieces of distinctive, durable, wearable art.

My work is inspired by mostly non-textile based art forms (including architecture and medieval manuscripts) from several global cultures and time periods. Currently much of my work reflects design motifs from Persian manuscripts and Turkish architectural elements, discoveries from my recent travels. You will see influences in my work from countries I have studied but not yet visited, including Northern Europe and Asia, as well as time periods ranging from medieval and renaissance, to Neo-Victorian and Steampunk. This fusion of cultural and historical influences encourages me to craft hats that are unique and timeless ... so much so that some of my customers have decided “ one cannot own too many of these hats” and have become avid collectors of my work.

August Phoenix, the magnificent and immortal bird known to many cultures, that rises from its own ashes to be born anew, is a reference to the cross-cultural, cross-time inspirations for my work. It is also a reference to the reclaimed / recycled materials that I prefer to work with - new hats from reclaimed textiles, handcrafted to wear forever ...
