Welcome to The Phoenix Files!

This blog is a collection of papers and how-to articles I have written over the past 25+ years, as well as my travel journals and announcements.  Scholarly works from "The Library" on my old website, are labeled here as "Historica Tractatu."

My travels have had heavy influence on my work and are the 'back story' behind many of my designs. Some of my older journals are revised from the original, and most link to photo albums on Facebook.

Something tattered this way comes...

Just over a year ago, I was introduced to Michael Broder, through a colleague at TAFAList, Rachel Biel. Michael had purchased a kufe, but the sizing was off and it was too small for him to wear. I was enlisted to remedy that. The results can be seen on Rachel's blog at Afghan Tribal Arts

Last week, Rachel referred another customer to me. Another kufe, this one with straight sides, embroidered with Jerusalem crosses.  An unfortunate victim of the household dog who claimed it as a chew-toy.

The kufe arrived a few days later, tattered and torn, with a section of the embroidery beyond repair.  I sent a cost estimate to the customer, who responded today.  He approved my plan to reconstruct rather than restore.

And so, my next salvage project begins...
