About Me

Heather Daveno

Creativity is the power to connect the seemingly unconnected…”  William Plomer

I’ve had a penchant for making new things out of old things for as long as I can remember… I’m also fascinated by the history, arts and architecture of Europe, Central Asia and the Far East, as well as historical techniques used in textile production and embellishment in those times and places. These two passions merge in my work.

I craft my hats from textiles and found objects that I glean from thrift stores, rummage sales, and other people’s cast-offs, using tools handed down to me from my grandmothers. Many of my hat patterns, embroidery stitches and techniques date back several centuries. Working with “old timey” tools, techniques and textiles gives me a sense of reclaiming history, while giving a contemporary use to previously discarded objects.

What is the meaning behind "August Phoenix Hats"?
August refers not to the month, but to "a thing of peerless excellence"; Phoenix is a mythical bird represented in many cultures as being reborn from its own ash.  Together, they reference the fusion of cultural and historical influences that dominate my work, as well as the reclaimed materials I use.

August Phoenix Hats is a woman-owned business and a registered trademark in the State of Washington (a DBA of Lao Hats).  A percentage of your purchase benefits the International Rescue Committee in their efforts to assist and relocate refuge families who are in crisis in over 40 countries and 25 U.S. cities.

I post my newest works and works in progress on Facebook and on my blog at the Phoenix Files. Click on the "What People Say" at the bottom of this page for my customer reviews, and "I'm in the News" for press pieces that have been written about me.
